Happy Valley senior Natalie Newsome rewrote the school’s record books on Friday on her way to a state championship.

Newsome became the first Happy Valley athlete to win a state championship with her performance in the Girls Pole Vault at the 2019 TSSAA State Championship in Murfreesboro. The senior is the first-ever female track athlete and only the second female athlete in school history to claim a state title.

Newsome finished with a mark of 9-feet-6. Her mark was two feet ahead of runner-up Reilly Furr of Signal Mountain’s mark.

For Head Coach Matt Estep, Newsome is the first state champion during his tenure.

Newsome is a Milligan College Track and Field signee.

The Lady Warriors also saw Shalyn Whitson have a strong showing in the girls shot put. The junior record a throw of 29-feet-9 to finish in 10th.
