Lady Buffs fly past Reinhardt after big second half

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 26, 2019) – Sarah Robinson scored 22 points while Mackenzie Raizor posted her team-leading eighth double-double of the season, and the Milligan College women’s basketball team used a big second half to defeat Reinhardt University 75-58 Saturday afternoon inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

The win was No. 499 for Head Coach Rich Aubrey and improved the Buffs to 18-4 (16-2 AAC) this season and 16-6 overall against Reinhardt since the Eagles joined the Appalachian Athletic Conference in the 2009-10 season. Reinhardt, fourth in the league entering Saturday, fell to 12-9 (11-7 AAC).

Milligan won its second in a row and ninth in the last 10 games to remain two games back of Bryan College for the AAC lead.

Emily Kiser had one of the biggest shots of the day. With the Buffs on an 8-2 run late in the third, the junior from Elizabethton knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing as time wound down to make it an 11-2 run and give Milligan a 56-47 lead heading into the final period. Milligan then used the momentum from the late third-quarter surge to open up a 13-point lead, 63-50, within the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.

Emma Kate Brown made a big shot during the fourth-quarter run, hitting a three from the opposite wing of Kiser’s to cap a 7-0 Milligan run. Milligan was never in any danger from there, extending the lead to as many as 21 and never seeing it dip below 11 the rest of the way.

The game, although lopsided at the end, saw eight ties and 16 lead changes. Reinhardt caught fire after the opening tip-off, scoring 28 points in the opening quarter and leading by as many as eight in the early going.

Milligan responded to Reinhardt’s early advantage by holding the Eagles scoreless over nearly the first five minutes of the second quarter and to only six points the rest of the second quarter. Milligan went into the halftime break ahead 36-34.

Robinson’s 22 points marked the third time this season she posted 20 or more points. She added six rebounds to bring her career total to 994. Raizor’s eighth double-double of the season featured 12 points and 11 rebounds alongside two assists, two blocks and one steal.

Two other Buffs reached double figures for scoring. Kaely Gose had 12 points with four rebounds; Andi Lamb scored 10 points with two assists.

Kiser finished with three points, her only basket being the momentum-swinging three at the end of the third quarter. She added three assists and a block.

Three players were in double figures, led by Jada Hubbard with 17 points and nine rebounds. Bethany Headrick registered a game high 12 rebounds.

Milligan will be on the road for its next two games, starting with Truett-McConnell University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The next home game for Milligan is Saturday, Feb. 2, versus Allen University.
