The Elizabethton girls’ basketball team had a statement win on Monday night.
The Lady Cyclones advanced to the Region 1-AA Championship game with a 61-51 victory over South Greene on Monday in semifinal action. With the win, Elizabethton also secured a berth in Saturday’s sectional round.
The Lady Cyclones will take on Grainger County in Wednesday’s Region 1-AA Championship game.
Elizabethton set the tone early.
Morgan Headrick scored seven early points while seven different Lady Cyclones scored in the first eight minutes to power Elizabethton to a 21-10 lead. With key shots from Lina Lyon, EHS was able to fend off a Lady Rebel run to maintain a 33-25 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, South Greene stole the momentum in the opening minutes. The Lady Rebels got rolling and took their first lead of the game at midway through the quarter.
Elizabethton, however, fought back with fury to regain a seven-point lead after three complete quarters.
Lyon came up big for the Lady Cyclones in the fourth with six points during the final eight minutes as Elizabethton was able to keep SG at bay to extend the season.
EHS was paced by Lyon’s 13 points, while Kaitlin Bailey had 12 points. Headrick scored 11 points in the game. Torrie Roberts had eight key points for the Lady Cyclones.
