Elizabethton took a major step in their postseason journey.
The Lady Cyclones picked up an 8-0 victory over Unicoi County in the District 1-AA Winner’s Bracket final to clinch a spot in the Championship game as well as a Region 1-AA berth.
After the first two innings went scoreless, Elizabethton’s bats came alive in the visitors’ side of the third. Maci West and Jessica Cunningham each knocked a run across home plate, and Kira Dillard sent a pitch over the centerfield fence for a grand slam. That gave EHS a 6-0 after three.
Abbi McKinney hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth, and Allison Riddle knocked a run across in the fifth to account for the final score.
Dillard went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Lauren Brickey and McKinney had two hits apiece.
Cunningham picked up the win as she allowed just five hits with four strikeouts. Kelli Cunningham threw three innings of relief and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.
The Lady Cyclones will now await their challenger in the Championship game – which is slated for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The if-necessary game is set for 7 p.m., should Elizabethton drop that first game.
