A fourth-quarter run proved to be all the difference on Thursday night.

The Elizabethton girls basketball team used an 18-2 run in the fourth quarter to take a 51-30 victory over Happy Valley in the District 1-AA Tournament Quarterfinals on Warrior Hill. With the win, Elizabethton advances to take on Sullivan Central on Saturday, and clinched a berth in the Region 1-AA tournament.

It was a back-and-forth chess match early on.

Shalyn Whitson scored six points in the opening minutes to give the Lady Warriors a 9-5 lead, but Morgan Headrick and Kaitlin Bailey hit shots to help push EHS in front. Adrienne Hennegar hit a buzzer-beater layup to give HV a 14-12 lead after a quarter of play.

Elizabethton opened the second quarter on a methodical 9-0 run with big shots from Kaylen Shell and Abbey Townsend. Henegar, however, snapped the run for Happy Valley. Elizabethton held a 22-17 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Emily Lunceford hit a quick shot to pull HV within three points, before Bailey added a jumper for EHS to push the lead back to six points. Olivia Absher and Whitson hit back-to-back shots, and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Henegar gave the Lady Warriors a 26-25 lead with 1:19 to play in the quarter. Shell answers in the final minute to push EHS into a 29-28 lead after three complete quarters.

Bailey Ball opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to close the Lady Cyclone lead to one point. From there, it was all Elizabethton.

EHS saw Shell knock down a 3-pointer that kicked off an 18-0 run – including back-to-back 3-pointers from Torrie Roberts – to take a 19-point advantage with two minutes to play. Henegar and the Lady Warriors continued to battle, but were unable to close the gap.

The trio of Bailey, Shell and Roberts had 14 points apiece to lead the way for Elizabethton.

Henegar led HV with 13 points, while Whitson had eight points.
