The Elizabethton girls’ basketball team was unable to extend the season on Thursday night.

The Lady Cyclones dropped a 55-39 decision to Sullivan East in the opening round of the District 1-AA Girls Tournament.

In the first quarter, Elizabethton countered the Lady Patriots attack as Kaylen Shell hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter. EHS trailed 10-6 after the first eight minutes.

The Lady Cyclones saw Abbey Townsend spark the offense in the second stanza. Townsend scored all six points and the EHS defense kept Sullivan East in check as the Lady Patriots held a slim 17-12 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Patriots took control.

After quickly extending the lead to double-digits, Sullivan East held a steady lead throughout the third quarter. Elizabethton continued to battle – trimming the lead back to single digits at one point – but was unable to get within striking distance the rest of the way.

Shell led Elizabethton with 15 points. Townsend tallied 12 points.
