The Lady Cyclones went toe-to-toe with Gibbs on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, EHS came up short in a heartbreaker.
Elizabethton saw their season come to a close in a 4-0 loss to Gibbs in the Class AA sectional round.
The loss ends Elizabethton’s season with a 28-7 record.
In the first inning, Gibbs was able to get a pair of base runners on base, but EHS held strong to keep GHS off the board.
Maely Ingram led off the bottom of the first with a single. Elizabethton, however, was unable to capitalize as the first inning ended scoreless.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the second before Gibbs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maddie O’Quinn opened the inning with a walk, but EHS was unable to move her around the bases.
The Lady Eagles plated a run in the top of the sixth before a great grab on a flyball from Cheyenne Poiroux and a strikeout to end the inning.
Elizabethton continued to fight as Emma O’Quinn capitalized on a Gibbs error to reach base. However, a pair of great plays from the Gibbs defense kept EHS off the board.
In the final inning, the Lady Eagles added a run to push the lead to 4-0.
Mollie Johnson recorded a hit in the home side of the inning but Elizabethton was unable to rally past the Lady Eagles.
“I thought we hit the ball fairly well, but it just seemed to be right at them and they made every play,” Elizabethton Head Coach Ken Hardin said. “What can you say – sometimes you have to tip your hat. I am still proud of my kids and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”
Ingram and Johnson had a hit apiece for Elizabethton. Madisun Pritchard had three strikeouts in the pitching circle as she allowed four runs on nine hits.
