Lady Warriors pull away for ninth straight win; HV boys fall

The Happy Valley girls basketball team kept on a roll Friday night.

The Lady Warriors rolled to a 50-37 victory over Sullivan South in Three Rivers Action in Kingsport. It was the ninth straight victory for Happy Valley.

In the boys’ game, HV was unable to keep pace with a torrid South offensive attack as they fell 72-39.

For the Lady Warriors, it was a steady game from the tip.

Happy Valley took an 11-5 lead after a quarter of play – in part to 3-pointers by Tiana Long and Adrienne Henegar. HV pushed the advantaged to 20-11 at the break with a balanced attack.

After South trimmed the lead to five points after the third quarter, Olivia Absher and Shalyn Whitson along with Bailey Ball, Long and Henegar hit shots to help the Lady Warriors pull away for the win in the final quarter.

Whitson finished with 18 points to lead the way for Happy Valley. Henegar recorded 14 points, while Long and Absher had eight points each.

In the boys’ game, the Warriors were unable to overcome a sluggish third quarter.

After Happy Valley kept pace and trailed South by four points at the end of the first quarter, the Rebels pushed the lead to 12 points in the second stanza.

The offensive attack for South got heated up in the third quarter. Despite a hard-fought effort, Happy Valley was outscored 26-9 as the Rebels took control of the game and the win.

Bryce Carter led HV with 16 points.
