Lady Warriors roll past Cherokee; Warriors unable to keep pace

Carter County Sports

It was a split kind of night on Warrior Hill.

The Lady Warriors rolled to a 50-26 victory over Cherokee in nonconference action on Friday night, while the Warriors were unable to overcome a first-half deficit in a 57-36 decision to the Chiefs.

In the girls’ game, points were hard to come by in the early going.

Happy Valley held a 5-2 lead before a quick 5-0 run in the closing stages of the opening quarter gave the Lady Warriors a 10-2 advantage. A 14-0 Happy Valley run in the second quarter powered HV to a 24-10 halftime lead.

From there, HV was able to cruise to the win over the visiting foes.

Shalyn Whitson had 14 points to lead the way, while Gabby Wood had seven points.

Autumn Henegar and Olivia Absher had six points each.

In the boys’ game, Happy Valley was unable to keep pace with Cherokee.

After the teams traded shots in the opening minutes, Cherokee used a run to take a 12-6 run, but the Warriors answered with a run of their own to pull within two.

However, another Chief run gave Cherokee a 20-10 lead after eight minutes of play, and they were able to stretch the lead to 15 points at the half.

Happy Valley continued to battle but was unable to mount a rally in the second half.

Dylan Willis had 11 points to lead the way for the Warriors, while Alex Lunceford added five points.
