For the second time in three days, the Happy Valley softball team erased a sizable deficit late However, the Lady Warriors were unable to rally to the win in Friday.
Happy Valley saw their season come to a close after a 9-7 loss to Sullivan Central in the District 1-AA Softball Tournament at Sullivan East in an elimination game despite trimming a seven-run deficit in the game.
Happy Valley jumped out early as Olivia Absher hit a sacrifice fly to center field to push Cierra Sutherland across home plate in the top of the first, but the Lady Cougars countered with two runs of their own in the home side of the inning.
Central methodically pulled away over the three innings to take an 8-1 advantage into the fifth.
The Lady Warriors, however, weren’t going down without a fight as Laura Rice hit a double to right field that allowed Claire Johnson and Abby Holt to touch home plate to trim the gap to five runs.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Lady Warriors went to work again.
Maddie Lingerfelt pushed Rice across home plate, and Absher scored when Macy Puckett was hit by a pitch. Johnson cut the lead to two runs with a single to center field that brought Puckett and Lingerfelt across home plate. HV had the game-tying run at the plate, but was unable to extend the game.
Sutherland had a strong showing as she went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kadie Havner, Lingerfelt and Johnson each had two hits apiece. Johnson and Rice had two RBIs apiece.
In the circle, Holt allowed three runs on two hits in just over an inning of work. Absher had a strong showing as she allowed five earned runs on nine hits in just over four innings of work.
Courtney Willis led Sullivan Central with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.
