Milligan Track and Field looks to add to its’ storied history this weekend.
The Buffs have four athletes competing in the 2014 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio, and Head Coach Chris Layne feels that all four could earn their place in the Milligan history books.
“This is a quality group but we have to approach Friday’s semis with precision because I know everyone in each field will be ready to go,” Layne said.
The crew is led by sophomore Hannah Segrave, who is ranked fifth in the NAIA in the 800-meter. Segrave will compete in the 800-meter after setting the school record time of 2:13 in the event.
In the distance department, Milligan senior Christian Brewer will run in the 3K, where he was seeded 14th. Brewer recorded an 8:37 in the 3K earlier in the season, just six seconds off the Buffaloes’ school record.
Sophomore Taylor Tafelsky will compete in the mile after being seeded 16th in the event. Despite qualifying for the 800-meter and 3K, Tafelsky will only compete in the mile, where he is seeded 16th.
A freshman is also getting his first taste of the national stage as Joey Watson will compete in the shot put. Watson is ranked second nationally in the event with a toss of 16.40-meters.
“Even though three of the four are freshmen or sophomores, this group have national and international experience that should pay off when we line up this weekend.”
The Milligan group will open competition on Friday with finals set for Saturday.
