A steady approach powered Elizabethton to a win in the opening round of the District 1-3A Baseball Tournament.

Elizabethton picked up a 5-0 victory over Unicoi County at Joe O’Brien Field on Sunday night to advance into the winner’s bracket.

The Cyclones will take on Tennessee High on Monday at 5p, while Unicoi will take on Volunteer in an elimination game at 7:30p.

Elizabethtons struck first and then slowly pulled away.

In the top of the first, Gage Treadway put the ball in play and that pushed Kaleb Hambrick across the plate to give EHS a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.

Neither team was able to push a run across the plate until the top of the fourth.

Zak Workman stole third base, and then scored off a Jeriah Griffin single to extend the EHS lead.

A Workman double in the top of the fifth added another run to the EHS tally as Peyton Johnson scored off the hit.

Elizabethton secured the win in the seventh with two runs.

Treadway had a night on the mound as he struck out 13 batters in a near complete game effort. He allowed just five hits.

Connor Edmundson faced one batter, and recorded a strikeouts.

Workman was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Johnson had two hits.

Cade Russell, Hayden Nave and Griffin each added a hit for the Orange and Black.
