Russell, Cyclones race past Vikings

Sophomore Corey Russell and the Cyclones picked up steam on Friday night.

Russell recorded over 350 total yards as Elizabethton dispatched Tennessee High 51-21 inside Citizen’s Bank Stadium in non conference action.

The win moved EHS to 4-1 on the season.


The Cyclones struck first as sophomore Carter Everett hit Jacob Turner for a 12-yard touchdown, and Dylan Nordby tacked on the extra point. The teams traded possessions until the Vikings evened things up with a 20-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing possession, Elizabethton regained a 14-7 lead entering the second quarter when Turner caught his second touchdown of the night from Everett – this one from 36 yards out. TH evened things up quickly, but Russell and the Cyclones took over.

The next EHS possession saw Russell break free for a 55-yard touchdown run, and the sophomore added a pair of four-yard scores as the Cyclones held a 34-14 lead at the half.

Russell started the second half just as strong as he broke free for a 14-yard touchdown run and Jaxton Holly added the extra point. Holly added a 25-yard FG as EHS held a 44-14 advantage after three quarters.

Tennessee High scored on a blocked punt to open the final stanza, but the EHS defense held strong on subsequent possessions.

Defensive lineman Johnny Woodby capped off the scoring with a one-yard touchdown in the game’s closing minutes.

The speedy Russell had 241 yards rushing on 21 carries. In addition, the sophomore added 26 yards on two catches, 72 kickoff yards and 35 yards in punt returns.

Everett finished the game 13-of-21 for 137 yards in addition to 13 carries for 41 yards. Turner added 65 yards on six catches.
