Thursday Round-up: Jr. Lady ‘Landers Claim Area 1 Title; Lady Warriors Take Late Win

Cloudland 8, Johnson County 5 (middle school softball)
The Jr. Lady ‘Landers etched their name in the school’s record book by claiming the Area 1 Championship on Thursday afternoon.

It is the first Area 1 Championship in program history.

Johnson County took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, and pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the second. Cloudland, however, plated two runs in the third to battle back.

The Jr. Lady ‘Landers took control in the fourth inning with five runs and never looked back.

Regan Blair was 3-for-4, while Shevon Hamby and Caroline Shell added two hits for the CHS cause.

Regan Turbyfill was named the MVP of the tournament.

Happy Valley 5, Sullivan East 2 (softball)
The Lady Warriors won another thriller on Thursday.

Happy Valley moved into the winner’s bracket after playing three runs in the seventh inning in the District 1-AA Tournament.
HV is set to take on No. 2 Unicoi County on Saturday at 5:30 in Erwin.

The game entered the final inning tied at 2-2 after the Lady Patriots scored two runs in the home side of the sixth. The Happy Valley offense went to work in the top side of the seventh.

After Olivia Absher drew a walk to load the bases, Maddie Lingerfelt hit a single to score Laura Rice and Abby Holt. The Lady Warriors added another run when Absher scored on an error.

The bottom of the seventh saw Happy Valley retired East in order to secure the win.

Lingerfelt was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI to pace the Lady Warriors at the plate, while Cierra Southerland and Allie Grindstaff each added a RBI.

In the pitching circle, Holt was dominant as she allowed just one earned run on five hits with 11 strikeouts.


Cloudland 19, Hampton 1 (softball)
The Lady ‘Landers rolled to a Senior Day win.

Jasmine Birchfield plated four runs for Cloudland, while Heaven Caraway touched home plate three times.

Karah Fields, Krisi Bare and Marlee Hughes each scored two runs.
Sara Orr had a hit and run scored for the Lady Bulldogs.

Unicoi County 6, Unaka 3 (softball)
The Lady Rangers were unable to rally against the Lady Blue Devils on Thursday.

Unicoi held a 5-0 lead after four innings of play, before Unaka broke onto the board with three runs in the home side of the fifth. The Lady Rangers, however, were unable to push another run across to continue the rally.

Kylie Blevins was 2-for-3. Sadie Shoun, Trinity Bowers, Alana Parsons, Noelle Collins, Kendall Bare, and Hailey Taylor each added a hit.

Unicoi County 14, Happy Valley 0 (baseball)
The Warriors were unable to get anything going offensively in the opening round of the District 1-AA tournament.

Unicoi jumped out early, and despite a hard-fought HV effort, the Blue Devils were able to advance into the winner’s bracket.

Happy Valley will face Sullivan Central in an elimination game at 3:30 on Friday at Joe O’Brien Field in Elizabethton.
