Warriors erase deficit to upset South; Lady Warriors fall in OT

The Happy Valley boys basketball team wasn’t going to be denied on Tuesday.

The Warriors erased a double-digit deficit to take a 54-51 victory over Sullivan South in Three Rivers Conference action.

The Lady Warriors, however, fell victim to a South rally as they dropped a 69-66 overtime decision to the Lady Rebels.

In the boys’ game, the Warriors had their work out for them.
The Rebels raced out to an 18-6 lead after eight minutes of play, but the Warriors were able to keep pace in the second stanza. South, however, maintained a 31-16 lead at the half.
Happy Valley answered the call in the third quarter.

HV outscored the rebels 18-8 in the third quarter to trim the lead to single digits. The fourth quarter saw the Warriors continue to hold the momentum as they rallied past the Rebels for the win.

Bryce Carter had 20 points to lead Happy Valley, while Blake Young had 14 points.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Warriors came out of the gate quickly.

HV rolled to a 21-8 lead in the first eight minutes and converted that to a 33-23 lead at the half. The Lady Warriors continued to maintain a double-digit lead over the third quarter until a run late in the quarter cut into the lead.

Sullivan South continued to hold the momentum to close the gap to one point in the final quarter before HV extended the lead back to seven points.

South, however, wasn’t going to be denied as they used a 12-0 run to take the lead in the final minute. Happy Valley’s Adrienne Henegar sent the game to overtime with her last second free throw.

In the extra period, the teams swapped the lead until the Lady Rebels sealed the win in the closing seconds.

Henegar had 33 points to lead all scorers. Shalyn Whitson added 15 points for the Lady Warrior cause.
