It was a heartbreaking end to the season for the Happy Valley boys’ basketball team.
The Warriors dropped a double-overtime 80-79 decision to Johnson County in an elimination game of the District 1-AA tournament.
It was a hard knock battle from the opening tip.
In the first quarter, Johnson County jumped out to a 10-9 lead, but HV battled back to take a 25-23 advantage at the half.
In the second half, it became a game of swings.
Johnson County roared to a double-digit lead in the third quarter. The Warriors, however, weren’t going to go quietly as they outscored the Longhorns 30-16 in the fourth to close the gap and force the extra period.
After the teams traded shots and remained in a stalemate at the end of the first overtime period, Johnson County took a 80-77 lead with just over 30 seconds remaining, and HV was unable to answer after a Longhorn steal in the final seconds.
Blake Young had 22 points to lead the way for the Warriors, while Dylan Willis had 20 points. Luke Roberts and James Harmon had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
