After trailing by as much as 19 points late, the Cyclones would not go down without a fight.
A 28-point fourth quarter effort trimmed things down to double digits for Elizabethton, but it would not be enough against the Christian Academy of Knoxville, who earned a 74-62 victory Monday night in Elizabethton during the TSSAA East Sectional contest.
Elizabethton made things interesting early, trading back and fourth buckets to have things knotted up at 14 all but the Warriors stormed out in the final stretch of the first period to take a 22-17 lead. CAK continued the offense to hold a 35-28 advantage heading to the locker room at halftime.
With the Warriors defense holding up the Cyclones in the third to just six points, the orange and black squad knew what needed to be done in the fourth.
Hayden Townsend helped trimmed the lead within 10 points at 2:29 mark, 63-53. Townsend’s final nine points all came from 3-pointers in the quarter. Tre Mccrory added a pair of bombs while Adam Cornett popped another 3 to help the cause, but the Warriors were able to hit their free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
Michael Robinson led the Cyclones with 18 points, while Isaiah Sulack led CAK with 22 points.
The Cyclones ended the year with a 20-13 record overall. Elizabethton took home the Region 1-AA championship after earning the fourth seed out of the District 1-AA tournament.
