Hampton came up short in a battle for first place on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs fell 58-49 to University High inside Brooks Gym. In the girls’ contest, the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for a 40-28 victory.

In the boys’ game, it was the expected showdown.

After the teams played to an 8-8 score in the first quarter of play, University High took a 31-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Bulldogs battled back to close within one in the third quarter. Hampton, however, was unable to convert opportunities to regain the lead and trailed 43-39 heading to the fourth. UH was able to secure the win late in the final quarter to improve to 3-0 in district play.

Jordan Bentley had 11 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs, while Morgan Lyons and Izack Hill had eight points each. Rocky Croy and Mithcell Tolley had six and five points, respectively.

In the girls’ game, Hampton slowly pulled away for the win.
Both teams tallied four points in the opening quarter before the Lady Bulldogs took a 15-9 lead into the half.

A UH run closed the Hampton lead to one point, but the Lady Bulldogs answered with a run of their own to take control of the game.

Stephanie Campbell had 22 points to pace Hampton.
