Bulldogs roll past Cosby to claim No. 1 seed

Hampton took care of business Friday night.

The Bulldogs rolled to a 53-0 victory over Cosby to clinch the No. 1 seed from Region 1-2A. Hampton will open the 2019 playoffs against Cumberland Gap on Friday night.


Against Cosby, Hampton shook off a slow start and never looked back.

Senior Matt Hughes broke onto the board with an 11-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the first quarter and Macon Barden added the two-point conversion to give HHS an 8-0 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The roles were reversed midway through the second as Barden scored on a 23 yard touchdown run and Hughes tacked on the two-point conversion.


Conor Jones hit Gage Chambers for a 52-yard touchdown and then Jones wrapped the half up with a 13-yard touchdown to Isiah Greenwell to give HHS a 32-0 lead at the break.

Caleb Oaks opened the scoring in the third quarter for Hampton with a 37-yard touchdown run, and Jones hit Chambers for the two-point conversion. Early in the fourth quarter, Oaks caught a 29 yard pass from Jones for the score.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the scoring as Hayden Birchfield found Jonathan Greenwell for a 16-yard touchdown. Michael Harrison added the extra point.

Jones was 5-of-9 passing for 111 yards and three touchdowns, while he added 27 yards on the ground. Hughes finished with 81 yards on seven carries, while Barden had 68 yards on six carries.

Oaks finished with 45 yards.
