Hampton checked another goal off the list on Friday night.

The Bulldogs rolled to a 75-48 victory over Cosby to claim the Region 1-A Championship Game at Chuckey-Doak High School.

Hampton will host Grace Christian on Monday in the substate round with a ticket to Murfreesboro and the state tournament on the line. It is the Bulldogs’ fifth straight Region 1-A title.

Wyatt Lyons gave HHS an early spark.

After Cosby took an early lead, Lyons scored six points in the first quarter to help put the Bulldogs stay within one of the Eagles. Charlie Butler kicked off a 9-2 run with an old-fashioned 3-point play. The run was capped off with two Adam McClain shots that gave Hampton a 15-11 advantage heading into the second quarter.

From there, it was all Hampton.

Jose Velazquez forced a quick Cosby timeout with a bucket and Dakota Crumley added a lay-up to give Hampton a 20-13 advantage. The Crumley basket started a 13-2 run that saw Ian Kelly, Velazquez and Lyons score in the sequence.

Cosby closed the gap with five quick points. However, a Dru Owens’ 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Hampton a 36-19 advantage at the half. The Owens trey was the only one of the first half.

The Bulldogs picked up where they left off as Lyons added nine points out of a 13-5 Hampton run. HHS extended the lead to 56-28 entering the fourth quarter.

Any thought of a rally was quickly squashed by the Bulldogs in the final eight minutes.

Lyons finished with a game-high 24 points, while Velazquez had 12 points. Crumley had eight points. Timmy Hartley and Owens had six points each.

Landon Myers had 12 points to lead Cosby, while Ty Way added 10 points to the Eagle cause.
