Hampton’s rushing attack never looked back on Friday night.
The Bulldogs ran for 337 yards to power the way to a 60-19 win over Avery County (N.C.) in the season opener at Happy Valley.
Peyton Townsend scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter as HHS took a 6-0 lead into the second.
In the second quarter, it was all Hampton.
Townsend scored his second touchdown of the night from seven yards out while Brock Shelby added the two-point conversion to give HHS a 14-0 lead a minute into the frame.
After Avery returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, the Bulldog offense went back to work as Belcher capped a seven-play drive with an eight-yard score.
The Vikings once again scored on the ensuing kickoff to close the Hampton lead to 22-13 with 6:18 left in the half.
Shelby repaid the favor on the next kickoff as he raced 86 yards for the touchdown. Sage Milhorn and Townsend each added touchdowns on the ground, while Conner McKinney found Milhorn for a 17-yard passing touchdown as Hampton pushed the lead to 46-12 at the half.
After the Vikings scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter, Shelby scored on a 20-yard run, and Brody Lambert capped the scoring with a 13-yard run for the Bulldogs.
Townsend finished with 96 yards on 13 carries, while Belcher had 93 yards on 13 carries. Shelby added 44 yards.
Defensively, Hampton held Avery to -11 yards rushing and just 62 yards of total offense.
