Bulldogs Unable To Keep Pace With Johnson County

Hampton was unable to find an answer for Johnson County on Monday evening.

The Bulldogs dropped a 41-8 decision to the Longhorns at JC Campbell in a game that was resumed after being suspended on Friday night due to weather.

Hampton falls to 0-2 on the season, while the Longhorns improve to 2-0 on the year. The win snapped a five-game Hampton winning streak in the series.

Prior before the storm moved in on Friday, Johnson County took a 6-0 lead on the opening drive as Juan Mejia scored on a two-yard run. Before the ensuing kickoff, play was stopped due to weather, and the decision was made shortly after to suspend the game.

On Monday, the defenses traded possessions to open the game before Hampton took advantage of an errant snap on a Johnson County punt as Dominique Burleson jumped on the ball in the endzone for a Hampton touchdown. Burleson added the two-point conversion to send Hampton into the second quarter with an 8-6 lead.

Johnson County opened the second quarter as Jace Stout connected with Jack Csilag for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

After Hampton was unable to get anything going on the next drive, Meija capped a quick five-play drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to increase the Longhorn lead.

Carter Rhudy stopped the next Hampton drive as he stepped in front of a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown as Johnson County held a 27-8 lead at the half.

Hampton continued to battle in the second half but was unable to mount a rally.

Johnson County added a third-quarter touchdown when Stout scored from 29 yards out, while Stout connected with Landell Walker for a 35-yard touchdown pass in the fourth.

Burleson had 44 yards on 16 carries for the Bulldogs, while Peyton Townsend had 29 yards on 11 carries. Maddux Wilson added seven carries for 19 yards.

Meija finished with 23 carries for 177 yards to lead the Longhorns, while Stout was 9-of-17 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Stout also added 34 yards on three carries.

Csilag had three catches for 50 yards. Walker added 49 yards on two catches.

Hampton is set to return to action on Friday as Pisgah (NC) is set to visit JC Campbell Stadium. Johnson County is set to host Claiborne on Friday night.
