Athletics in the Carter County School System are on the pause button.
The Carter County Board of Education has voted to suspend all extracurricular activities – including athletics – for two weeks. The board will reassess the situation at their next board meeting on Thursday, August 23.
With the vote, it is expected that Week 1 and Week 2 games will be postponed or canceled, but an official decision hasn’t been announced regarding those games.
Games slated for Week 1 include Happy Valley at Cloudland, Gatlinburg-Pittman at Hampton, and North Greene at Unaka.
The move comes after the board voted to delay the start of school by a week until August 17. During the first week, the schools will be on a staggered schedule with 25% of the student population coming each day.
After the first week, schools will begin in an all-virtual situation.
