It was Cloudland Friday in the Roan Mountain Region 1-A quarterfinal.
The Lady ‘Landers stormed to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 61-18 victory against Washburn to advance to Monday’s Region 1-A semifinal.
In the semifinal, a trip to Cosby awaits Cloudland. It will be the third straight season that Cloudland and Cosby have squared off in the Region 1-A semifinals with a spot in the title game as well as a substate berth on the line.
The Lady Eagles defeated Hampton to advance
On Friday night, Cloudland seized control early and never let the Lady Pirates get comfortable behind a fierce defensive attack.
The Lady ‘Landers saw Mandy Benfield score two early buckets to get the scoring going.
After the Cloudland defense forced two quick Washburn timeouts and a 10-second call, Gracie Freeman and Kaylen Fields hit shots to push the lead. Jasmine Birchfield and Benfield added points later in the quarter, and Ella Benfield added a pair of free throws to push the lead to 19-0 after a quarter of play.
Points were harder to come by in the second quarter as M. Benfield scored four points in the frame while Fields added a 3-pointer as CHS held a 26-5 advantage at the half.
It continued to be all Cloudland in the second half.
Heaven Caraway knocked down a pair of 3-pointers while Birchfield and Freeman added jumpers to leave no doubt for CHS.
The Lady ‘Landers held a 48-10 lead after three complete quarters and cruised to the win from there.
M. Benfield finished the night with 16 points to pace the Cloudland attack, while Freeman had 10 points in the win.
Birchfield scored nine points, while Fields had seven points. Caraway finished with six points.
As a team, Cloudland forced 24 Washburn turnovers in the game.
