It wasn’t the result Cloudland was looking for in Baileyton on Friday night.
The Lady ‘Landers and ‘Landers dropped tight decisions to North Greene in District 1-A action as the CHS girls fell 44-40 to the Lady Huskies and the Cloudland boys came up short in a 57-47 decision to the hosts.
In the girls’ game, it was a battle between the two teams.
After NG held a two-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, it continued to be a tight affair. Four Lady ‘Landers scored in the second quarter, but was unable to cut into the NG lead as CHS trailed 23-21 at the break.
The second half saw points come at a premium for the squads. Cloudland saw Megan Lunsford scored five points in the third quarter and Stacia Wilson added four of her on to cut the CHS deficit to one point going to the fourth. CHS, however, was unable to come out with the victory despite a balanced attack in the final eight minutes.
Wilson led the way for Cloudland with 12 points, and Trinity Vines added seven points. Gracie Freeman tallied six points. Jasmine Birchfield and Lunsford finished with five points apiece.
For the Cloudland boys, they had to battle from an early deficit.
North Greene jumped out to a 19-11 lead over CHS in the first quarter. The ‘Landers saw six players score in the second quarter, but they were unable to cut into the Husky lead as CHS trailed 36-27 at the break.
Robert Leeper gave CHS a spark with five points in the third quarter, but Cloudland was unable to make a run in the frame. Conner Birchfield found a groove in the final eight minutes for Cloudland as he scored seven fourth-quarter points. However, NG played CHS even in the stanza to secure the win.
Birchfield had 13 points to lead the way for Cloudland, while Leeper had 11 points. Hunter Shell tallied eight points in the win for CHS.
