Cloudland used an extra shot of Coffey on Friday night.

The ‘Landers saw junior Jordan Coffey score three touchdowns – three different ways – as CHS took a 50-13 victory over Midway to advance to the second round of the Class A playoffs at Orr Field on Friday night.

Cloudland will host Coalfield at Or Field next week. It will be the fourth playoff meeting between the two in the past five seasons.

The ‘Lander offense set the tempo early.

Cloudland held the ball nearly six minutes on the game’s opening drive, but a turnover stalled the drive deep in Midway territory. The CHS defense, however, repaid the favor on the first Midway offensive play as Malachi Benfield jumped in front of a Green Wave pass for an interception.

That set the stage for Coffey’s first touchdown of the night on a 1-yard dive. The junior added the conversion as Cloudland took an 8-0 lead with four minutes left in the quarter.

Midway battled back with a quick drive that saw them close within 8-7 going to the second quarter.

After Cloudland was forced to punt early in the second, Midway marched into CHS territory. Triston Lacy stopped the Midway drive with an interception as he returned the ball to midfield.

Josh Blair capped off the next CHS drive with a 17-yard touchdown scamper as the ‘Landers took a 14-7 advantage just past the midway point of the second quarter.

The ‘Lander defense forced Midway off the field on the next drive on a fourth and short as David Miller stuffed a running lane. Cloudland wasted no time adding to their lead as Benfield found Jacob Singleton for a 54-yard touchdown.

The conversion gave Cloudland a 22-7 lead at the half.

Midway opened the second quarter in style with a 62-yard touchdown pass to trim the CHS lead to a single possession. The teams, however, traded possessions as Cloudland held a 22-13 lead going into the final 12 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter, however, was all Cloudland.

After the CHS defense forced a punt in the Midway endzone, Coffey pummeled a trio of Green Wave defenders on his way to the end zone with a 35-yard punt return touchdown. On the ensuing drive, Coffey jumped in front of a Midway pass and raced 42 yards for the defensive touchdown to complete the trifecta.

That gave Cloudland a 36-13 lead with 9:19 to play.

Lacy and Conner Birchfield add touchdowns in the final quarter to ice the game for the ‘Landers

Coffey finished with 122 yards on 26 carries.

Blair had 12 carries for 108 yards.
