Cyclones Edge West Ridge In Home Opener

In another tight game, Elizabethton was able to outduel West Ridge.

The Cyclones picked up a 21-19 win over the Wolves on Friday night at Citizens Bank Stadium. With the win, EHS improves to 2-1 on the year.

Elizabethton’s three games have been decided by a combined 14 points so far this season.

The Cyclones struck quickly on Friday night.

EHS moved quickly down the field on the opening drive as Rhett Slagle hit Justin Whitehead for a 12-yard touchdown. Will Bowers added the extra point to give the Cyclones a 7-0 lead.

After the Cyclones were unable to convert on a fumble recovery, West Ridge moved to inside the EHS 5. However, penalties forced the Wolves to a field goal attempt, which was blocked by Justius Wallin.

EHS led 7-0 after a quarter of play.

The Cyclones struck again early in the second as Slagle scored on a short run to push the lead to 14-0.

West Ridge, however, battled back as Justius Hilton raced 42 yards for a touchdown to trim the EHS lead to 14-6.

The Wolves moved into scoring position in the closing seconds, but the Cyclone defense saw Jack Blevins intercept a pass in the endzone to end the half as EHS led 14-6 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, West Ridge got on the board as Ethan Amyx scored on an 18-yard run. The Cyclone defense held strong on the two-point conversion to keep the EHS lead at 14-12 with 11:15 left to play.

Elizabethton moved quickly down the field to answer as Whitehead and Slagle connected on a 19-yard pass for the score with nine minutes left.

The Wolves didn’t go quietly as Amyx scored on a short run to cut the Elizabethton lead to 21-19 with 2:27 left to play. The Cyclones, however, secured the win by securing the onside kick and running out the clock.

Slagle finished 16-of-23 for 209 yards with two touchdowns, and also added a score on the ground.

Z. Wallin had seven catches for 128 yards, while Whitehead had three catches for 53 yards.

Hilton led West Ridge with 151 yards on 16 carries, while Amyx had 96 yards on 17 carries.
