Cyclones Sees Season Come To An End In Second Round

Elizabethton was unable to keep pace on Friday.

The Cyclones fell 54-14 to Anderson County in the second round of the TSSAA Class 4A playoffs Friday night in Anderson County.

With the loss, Elizabethton’s season comes to a close while Anderson County will host Greeneville next week.

The Cyclones jumped out early.

After Rhett Slagle found Jack Blevins for a 61-yard pass, CJ Mathes completed the opening drive with a four-yard touchdown. The Will Bowers extra point gave Elizabethton a 7-0 lead.

The Mavericks, however, answered in a big way.

Anderson County reeled off the next 34 points to take a 34-7 lead into the half.

Elizabethton continued to battle but was unable to mount a rally in the second half.

Zach Wallin caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Slage in the fourth to account for the final EHS score.

Slagle finished 11-of-16 passing for 86 yards, while Wallin had eight catches for 67 yards.

Justin Whitehead added an interception for the EHS defense.

Mathes finished with 10 carries for 35 yards.

Waylon LaRue had nine carries for 181 yards with four touchdowns and also added a 96-yard touchdown kickoff return to lead Anderson County.
