Elizabethton picked up a varsity sweep in Upper Lakes play on Thursday night.
The Lady Cyclones pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 44-34 victory over Unicoi County, while the Cyclones erased a slow start to take a 59-54 win over the Blue Devils inside Treadway Gymnasium.
In the girls’ game, it was a back-and-forth battle.
The Lady Cyclones jumped out to a 10-2 in the opening minutes before the Lady Blue Devils battled back to pull within one. EHS led 16-13 after a quarter of play.
Points were hard to come by in the second as the teams went nearly five minutes before either squad was able to get on the scoreboard. EHS was able to maintain a 21-18 lead at the break.
Unicoi jumped out to a 24-21 lead to open the third quarter, but the Lady Cyclones countered with a 10-2 run to take a 31-26 lead after three complete. Unicoi County stayed within striking distance to open the fourth, but a 9-2 Elizabethton run secured the win for the Lady Cyclones.
Kayelyn Nave and Rylee May scored nine points apiece for Elizabethton, while Jamira Smalls scored seven points. Adrian Heading and Josy Shell had six points each.
Abagail Vidrio led Unicoi with 12 points.
In the boys’ game, Elizabethton had to battle back from an early deficit.
The Blue Devils scored the first 12 points of the game to take a 12-0 lead before EHS scored five straight points. UC led 16-5 after a quarter of play.
The teams traded shots through much of the second before EHS ended the game on a quick 4-0 run to pull the deficit to 26-20 at the half.
The Cyclones came out of the half quickly as they went on a 12-1 run before the Blue Devils took a slim 40-38 lead into the final quarter.
After Unicoi County opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run, the Cyclones answered in a big way as EHS went on a 16-0 run to take the win.
Hudson Pate led Elizabethton with 16 points, while Justin Whitehead scored 15 points. Andrew Barnett added 12 points. Hudson Smith finished with eight points.
Jackson Simmons led Unicoi County with 27 points.
