Friday Round-up: Cyclones Hold Off Crockett, Lady ‘Landers Outlast Unaka

Elizabethton 62, David Crockett 58
The Cyclones held off Crockett in the final seconds to take a big district win inside Treadway Gymnasium.

Elizabethton jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the game before the Pioneers ended the frame on a 12-5 run as EHS held a 14-12 lead after a quarter of play.

The teams went back and forth with the lead the entire game as the Cyclones maintained a 30-27 lead at the half, and held a 42-41 advantage after three complete quarters.

A quick 6-0 run in the opening minutes of the fourth helped Elizabethton extend the lead and the Cyclones were able to hold off the Pioneers after Crockett cut the lead to a one-possession game in the final seconds.

Nathan Bailey had 18 points to lead Elizabethton, while Hudson Pate scored 16 points. Hudson Smith and Andrew Barnett had eight points each.

Unaka 64, Cloudland 51
Unaka used a strong second quarter to take a district win on Friday night.

A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Rangers hold a 14-11 lead after a quarter of play. In the second quarter, Unaka outscored the ‘Landers 16-7 to take a 30-18 lead at the break.

The teams continued to trade shots in the second half as Unaka maintained a 51-39 lead after the third quarter.

John Hardin scored 24 points to lead Unaka, while Mason Wilson and Austin Lambert had 10 points apiece. Aiden Walsh scored eight points.

Uriah Jarrett led all scorers with 31 points for the ‘Landers. Nick Caraway scored 10 points.

Hampton 65, Happy Valley 54
The Bulldogs used a strong second half to outlast an upset-minded Warriors squad.

Happy Valley jumped out to a 16-9 lead after a quarter of play and took a double-digit lead during the second quarter.

Hampton, however, battled back to close the gap to 22-18 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs took control by outscoring HV 31-10 in the frame. The Warriors continued to battle, but Hampton was able to keep them at bay to take the win.

Chase Davenport led the way with 22 points for Hampton, while Jayden Nave scored 11 points. Jamie Turbyfull finished with seven points.

Ron Paul Parker led HV with 11 points. Lane Parker and Artee Bahn scored eight points apiece.

Girls
Cloudland 52, Unaka 46
In a back-and-forth battle, Cloudland rallied in the fourth to pick up a key district win on the road at Unaka.

The teams traded shots in the opening quarter as Unaka held a 14-11 lead after eight minutes of play. Neither team was able to get separation as the half ended with the Lady Rangers holding a slim 24-22 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Unaka hit five 3-pointers in the frame, but Cloudland countered with a balanced attack to stay within striking distance as UHS led 41-38 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Lady ‘Landers turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter by holding Unaka to just two field goals as CHS outscored Unaka 14-5 in the quarter to secure the win.

Makinna Shell, Abriella Jones, and Regan Blair scored 14 points each to lead Cloudland. Makenzie Street added eight points.

Michelle Shields had a game-high 20 points for Unaka, while Kalli Shepard scored 11 points. Ari Sutherland added nine points for the Lady Rangers.

David Crockett 55, Elizabethton 33
The Lady Cyclones came up short on Friday night.

Elizabethton jumped out to an early lead before the Lady Pioneers used a run of their own to take a 12-11 lead after a quarter of play. A back-and-forth second quarter saw the game tied at 21-21 late in the second quarter before DC scored the last five points of the half to take a 26-21 lead at the break.

The Lady Cyclones continued to battle but were unable to trim into the Crockett deficit as EHS trailed 35-27 after three complete quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Pioneers opened the frame on a 12-1 run to secure the win.

Reagan May had 10 points for Elizabethton, while Peyton Mcgee had nine points.

Hampton 54, Happy Valley 27
The Lady Bulldogs took control early to take the win.

Hampton jumped out to a 17-5 lead over the first eight minutes and pushed the advantage to 33-11 at the half. The Lady Warriors continued to fight but were unable to mount a rally as Hampton stayed in control.

Brea Hicks had 12 points to lead the way for Hampton, while Gracie Jenkins had nine points. Piper Helle scored seven points.

Cayden Anderson led HV with 11 points.
