Hampton took care of business Thursday night.

The Bulldogs captured the Region 1-A Championship with a 60-51 victory over University High at Walters State. With the win, Hampton will host Monday’s substate game against Harriman.

Against the Bucs, it was a heavyweight fight.

After the teams traded shots over the opening minutes, Hampton used a late run to take a 20-14 lead after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs kept the momentum going as they pushed the lead to double-digits, but the Bucs used a late run to trim the advantage before the half.

Hampton, however, maintained a 30-23 lead at the break after holding a 16-2 rebounding advantage in the first half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs kept UH at bay for most of the quarter. Hampton maintained a 12-point advantage after three complete quarters.

UH, however, wasn’t done as they methodically trimmed into the Hampton lead to three points in the closing minutes. The Bulldogs took care of business at the free-throw line to secure the win.

Caleb Oaks had 16 points to lead Hampton, while Rocky Croy and Conor Jones had 11 points apiece. Izaak Hill scored eight points.

Matt Hughes and Jordan Bentley had five and four points, respectively. Morgan Lyons grabbed 10 rebounds for Hampton.

Kaleb Meredith and Mason Broome led UH with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
