Hampton sent a strong message on Friday night.
The Bulldogs ran past state-ranked South Greene in a 30-0 victory at JC Campbell Stadium in Region 1-2A action.
With the win, Hampton improves to 6-2 on the season and moves into a tie for first place in the region with a 2-1 mark along with Happy Valley and South Greene.
It was the first loss of the season for the Rebels, who were ranked No. 6 in the Class 2A AP poll.
The Bulldogs set the tone early.
On the game’s opening drive, Matt Hughes raced 64 yards for a touchdown and Caleb Oakes added the two-point conversion to give HHS an early 8-0 lead. After the defense held strong on the ensuing Rebel drive,
Hampton increased the lead to 16-0 as Isiah Greenwell scored on a short touchdown run. Conor Jones found Macon Bardon for the two-point conversion.
Neither team was able to get back on the board for the rest of the half as Hampton held a 16-0 lead at the break.
The Bulldogs opened the second half quick as Greenwell broke free for a 58-yard touchdown to give Hampton a three-score lead. Hampton’s defense continued to keep South Greene stifled as the Bulldogs maintained a 22-0 lead after three complete quarters of play.
In the final quarter, Jones capped off the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run and then the sophomore quarterback added the conversion to secure the decisive win.
The Bulldogs are set to return to action next week as Unaka visits for a non-conference clash.
