Hampton splits regular season finale

Hampton braved the nasty weather for a last tuneup before preseason, and the Bulldogs took full advantage.

The Hampton boys extended the win streak to 13 games with a 59-48 victory over Unicoi County on Monday night in Erwin. The Lady Bulldogs, however, weren’t able to shake off a rocky third quarter in a 46-42 non conference loss.

In the boys’ game, the teams traded points early as five Bulldogs got in the book to push HHS to a 15-13 lead after a quarter of play. Neither team was able to get breathing room in the second as Hampton was limited to just two field goals in the period. The Bulldogs led 21-20 at the half.

Wyatt Lyons and the Hampton offense heated up in the second half. Lyons scored six third quarter points, while Coby Jones scored five points in the frame as HHS extended the lead to six points heading to the final quarter.

Unicoi County scored 17 points in the final quarter, but the Hampton offense poured in 22 points to secure the win.

Jones scored 16 points for Hampton, and Chris Holtsclaw scored 13 points. Lyons tossed in 10 points. Nathan Norris added seven points.

For the Lady Bulldogs, the start was near perfection. Alexus Grubbs and Shy Tuelle powered Hampton to an 11-2 lead after a quarter of play. HHS extended the lead to 11 points in the second quarter as Bree Hoyle hit six points in the frame. Hampton maintained a 27-16 advantage at the half.

The second half saw the teams change roles.

Unicoi County slowly cut into the lead behind the play of Neelee Griffith. Hampton held a 32-30 lead at the end of the third, but Hannah Rice put the Lady Blue Devils up with 3:14 to play in the game. From there, Unicoi County maintained the lead to secure the win.

Grubbs led the way with 15 points, and Tuelle scored 13 points in the game. Hoyle added eight points in the game.
