It wasn’t the ending upset-minded Hampton was hoping for.

The Lady Bulldogs was unable to complete the upset in a 43-36 loss to Cosby, the top-seed out of District 2, in the opening round of the Region 1-A tournament that closed out the season for HHS.

The Lady Bulldogs had to dig out of an early hole.

Cosby jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first six minutes as the Lady Bulldogs were limited to just two free throws in the stretch. Shy Tuelle, however, got the Hampton offense rolling as she scored seven of the next nine Hampton points. That allowed the Bulldogs to pull within one going to the second quarter.

A 7-0 Cosby run over four minutes opened the second quarter, and the Eagles pushed their advantage to double-digits later in the quarter. Stephanie Campbell and company answered the bell as Hampton battled back to cut the deficit to 21-17 at the half.

The third quarter was much the same as neither team could take a clear-cut advantage as Cosby maintained a 33-28 lead going into the fourth.

Hampton made a late charge in the fourth quarter after cutting the deficit to two points with just over four minutes to play. Tulle put Hampton up front with just over three minutes to play, but Cosby responded on the other end to regain a one-point lead.

The Bulldogs were never able to recover as the Lady Eagles took advantage of some miscues in the closing minute to secure the win and end Hampton’s season.

Campbell finished with 12 points to pace Hampton, while Tuelle had 10 points. Brooke Hughes and Leanne Guinn had six points apiece.
