For three-quarters, it went Hampton’s way. However, David Crockett took control in the final 12 minutes.
The Bulldogs were unable to keep pace in the final quarter in a 56-39 loss to the Pioneers in Jonesborough on Friday night. With the loss, Hampton falls to 1-4 on the year.
Hampton found themselves in an early hole as the Pioneers scored the game’s first two touchdowns. Hunter Davenport put the Bulldogs on the board with a 13-yard touchdown run, and then the senior caught a Jason Russell pass for a 30-yard touchdown. On the ensuing try, a strange sequence of events led to the Pioneers not contesting the Hampton try as the Bulldogs took a 15-14 advantage into the second half.
The offenses stole the show in the second half.
After the Pioneers scored on a 17-yard run, Davenport counted with a 20-yard touchdown run. The teams continued to trade scores as Russell and Davenport scored for Hampton as the Bulldogs held a 39-34 advantage going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, it was all David Crockett as the Pioneers reeled off 22 straight points to secure the win.
Davenport finished with 197 yards on 27 carries with three touchdowns.
Hampton is set to travel to Sullivan North next week.
