Hampton came up heartbreakingly short on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs fell 6-5 to Chuckey-Doak in the District 1-2A Tournament semifinals at Chuckey-Doak. The loss ends Hampton’s season one game short of the District 1-2A Championship game as well as the Region 1-2A tournament.
Hampton had to battle back from an early deficit.
The Lady Black Knights opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hampton was able to get one of the runs in the top of the second as Matti Holtsclaw – who was pinch-running for Bri Davis – scored after Lillian Andrews drew a walk. The Lady Bulldogs were unable to keep the inning going as they stranded the bases loaded.
Chuckey-Doak added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs battled back in the top of the fourth.
Dru Nickles reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Andrew drew a walk. Hannah Smith loaded the bases with a single before Maleah Scalf drew a walk to plate a run. Emma Birchfield hit a single to left field that allowed H. Smith and Andrews to score as Hampton tied the game.
HHS saw Malory Lamb draw a walk to reload the bases before the Lady Bulldogs took the lead Davis hit a single to right field that allowed Scalf to cross home plate.
Hampton was unable to continue the inning but took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
Chuckey-Doak played a run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and saw a two-out triple plate a run in the sixth to give CD a 6-5 lead going to the top of the seventh.
Hampton didn’t go quietly.
The Lady Bulldogs saw Smith draw a two-out walk before Scalf hit a single to get the tying run into scoring position.
Hampton, however, was unable to continue the rally as a fielder’s choice ended the game.
Davis went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Hampton, while H. Smith, Scalf, Birchfield, Lamb, and L. Smith each had a hit. Birchfield tallied two RBI.
Andrews and Scalf each had an RBI.
