Lady ‘Landers Come Up Short In District 1-A Championship Game

In the District 1-A Championship game, Cloudland came up short despite a hard-fought effort.

The Lady ‘Landers dropped a 45-37 decision to North Greene in the title game at Happy Valley on Monday evening.

Cloudland will move on to the Region 1-A Tournament where they will host Hancock County on Friday in the quarterfinals.

The Lady ‘Landers hit the gas early.

Isabella Christman scored 15 seconds into the game and four straight points from Ella Benfield to take a 7-2 lead. The teams traded points before NG scored five straight to end the quarter to trim the Cloudland lead to 14-13.

Benfield opened the scoring for Cloudland in the second quarter, but NG took an 18-16 lead.

Ryan Turbyfill knocked down a 3-pointer to push CHS back in front. Saharra McKinney scored two buckets over the final minute as Cloudland maintained a 23-22 halftime lead.

After North Greene opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run, McKinney hit a basket, but North Greene’s Brooklyn Anderson answered.

Karah Fields knocked down a trey to pull Cloudland back within one as the quarter entered the final minute, but NG scored four straight to take a 33-28 lead into the final quarter.

The Lady Huskies opened the final quarter on a 7-1 run before Turbyfill hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 to snap the run. Fields and McKinney hit late shots as Cloudland tried to rally, but they were unable to trim into the NG lead.

Benfield led Cloudland with 10 points, while McKinney had nine points. Fields ended the game with eight points.

The trio represented Cloudland on the All-Tournament team.

Anderson – who was named the tournament MVP – led North Greene with 15 points, while Zoe Sanders had 11 points.
