Lady ‘Landers drop heartbreaker in Region 1-A semifinals

It was a heavyweight fight in the Region 1-A semifinals. Unfortunately for Cloudland, they were unable to land the knockout punch.

The Lady ‘Landers was unable to answer a late Cosby run in a 48-42 loss at Sullivan North on Monday night. With the loss, Cloudland sees a remarkable season come to a close one game shy of the Region 1-A Championship game and the substate round.


Cloudland found themselves in an early hole as the Lady Eagles scored the game’s first nine points. The Lady ‘Landers, however, settled down as Stacia Wilson, Gracie Freeman and Trinity Vines scored to close the gap to 11-6 at the end of the quarter.
CHS continued to battle back as they closed the deficit to one point behind the play of Jasmine Birchfield, Gracie Freeman and Wilson.

Cosby, however, ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room.

The Lady ‘Landers continued to fight in the second half.

Cloudland quickly timed the lead in the opening minutes before Cosby answered the CHS run. A 7-1 Lady ‘Lander run was capped by a Heaven Caraway trey at the end of the third quarter to give CHS their first lead with eight minutes to play.


The final quarter saw the teams trade baskets in the early going. After Megan Miller regained the lead for Cloudland, but CHS answered again to take a 3-point lead. Cosby tied the game up at 37-37 before Megan Lunsford hit a 3-pointer to push the Lady ‘Landers back up 40-37 midway through the quarter.

A Trinity Vines jumper in the paint pushed the CHS lead to 42-38 with 3:04 to play. However, Cosby ended the game on a 10-0 run from that point to take the win.

Wilson led Cloudland with 12 points. Vines added nine points, and Megan Lunsford tallied eight points. Freeman had six points for the Lady ‘Landers.

Bralyn Megaha scored 18 points and Leia Groat had 15 points to lead Cosby.
