Lady ‘Landers fall to SG on opening night

The Lady ‘Landers were unable to get a win on opening night.

Cloudland dropped a tough 67-61 overtime decision to South Greene in a Hall of Champions game at Sonny Smith Gymnasium.


The teams played nearly even in the opening eight minutes as the Lady Rebels held an 18-14 lead after a quarter of play. A pair of 3-pointers from Heaven Caraway and six points from Jasmine Birchfield pushed Cloudland to a 31-24 lead as the Lady ‘Landers held SG to just six points in the frame.

After the teams played even in the third quarter, South Greene outscored Cloudland 19-12 in the final quarter to force overtime. 14 of the Lady Rebel’s fourth-quarter points came from the free-throw line.

Kaylen Field put Cloudland on the board in the extra period, but the Lady ‘Landers were unable to get back in front in the closing minutes.

Mandy Benfield and Gracie Freeman had 11 points apiece to lead Cloudland, while Caraway had nine points. J. Birchfield tallied eight points.

Kenzie Birchfield and Karah Fields had five points apiece.
