Lady Rangers, Hampton boys pick-up league wins

Unaka 55, University High 34 (girls)
The Lady Rangers cruised to a District 1-A victory on Tuesday night at University High.

Unaka slowly pulled away from the Lady Bucs to a 27-18 lead at the half. From there, it was all Lady Rangers.

Katlyn Weaver had 13 points to lead all scorers, while Myah Parlier and Sarah Tipton had 10 and nine points, respectively.


South Greene 71, Hampton 37 (girls)
The Lady Bulldogs came up short in an upset bid of the defending state champion Lady Rebels.

Hampton went toe-to-toe in the early going as they trailed 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. After SG extended the lead to 11 points and maintained it for much of the second and third quarter, Hampton was unable to slow down the Lady Rebel offensive as they were outscored 29-6 in the period.

Alexus Grubb tallied 17 points for Hampton. Shy Tuelle recorded seven points.


Hampton 76, South Greene 47 (boys)
The Bulldogs slowly pulled away to take a cap off a perfect 10-0 district record. It was Hampton’s 19th straight regular season win against District 1-A foes.

HHS held a 17-11 lead after the first quarter of play and pushed it to 16 points at the break.

From there, it was all Hampton.

Dru Owens led the way with 28 points. Wyatt Lyons and Jose Velasquez had 15 and 10 points, respectively. Adam McClain added nine points.

University High 64, Unaka 38 (boys)
The Rangers were unable to recover from a slow start at Brooks Gym.

University High quickly took a lead and turned it into a 31-18 halftime lead. The Rangers continued to fight, but were unable to close back.

Kyler Lewis led Unaka with 15 points. John Boy Ramsey had nine points.
