‘Landers Cruise Past Oakdale To Advance

Cloudland left no doubt.

The ‘Landers rolled to a 60-16 second-round victory over Oakdale to advance to the Class A State Quarterfinals at Orr Field on Friday night.

It will be the first time since the 2002 season that the Cloudland program has made a quarterfinal appearance.

The ‘Landers will host Coalfield – who dispatched Midway 41-6 – next Friday night at Orr Field with a home state semifinal game on the line.

Cloudland used the running game to set the tone early and never looked back.

Seth Birchfield scored his first touchdown on the game’s opening drive with a 38-yard run, and then added the two-point conversion. The senior scored later in the quarter on a 27-yard run with Camden Peppers hitting Gage McKinney for the 2-point conversion.

Caleb Sluder wrapped up the first-quarter scoring with a three-yard run as CHS held a 22-0 lead after 12 minutes of play.

Birchfield added two more touchdowns to his tally in the second half – one from 25 yards out and the other from four yards out – as the ‘Landers held a 38-8 advantage at the half after the Eagles scored in the final minute.

The Cloudland defense continued to stymie the Eagles in the second half, and Birchfield added an eight-yard score as Cloudland continued to control the game.

In the fourth quarter, Birchfield scored his sixth touchdown of the night with a 40-yard run with McKinney adding the two-point conversion.

McKinney found the endzone later in the quarter with a 35-yard catch of a Peppers pass.

Oakdale ended the game with a 45-yard touchdown and two-point conversion.

Birchfield finished the game with 22 carries for 233 yards, while Sluder had 133 yards on 21 carries.
Peppers was 3-of-5 passing for 46 yards.

Maverick Simerly recorded two sacks, while Jacob Street had a sack and an interception. Cayden Cordell also added an interception for the CHS defense.
