Hampton won in a thriller on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs saw Caleb Oaks scored with two seconds remaining to lift Hampton to a 49-47 win over Cosby in the Region 1-A semifinals at Walters State.
With the win, the Bulldogs advanced to Thursday’s Region 1-A Championship game against University High and also secured a spot in Monday’s sectional action.
It was a battle with the Eagles from the get-go.
Points were hard to come by for the Bulldogs in the opening minutes as Cosby took a 15-6 lead after eight minutes of play.
After Cosby stretched the lead to 21-12, the Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to close the gap before midway through the quarter. The teams traded shots to end the half as Hampton trailed 28-24 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure and limited Cosby’s opportunities. Cosby, however, used a late run to take a 37-32 lead into the final quarter.
Hampton answered the call once again.
The Bulldogs were methodical in the final eight minutes. Hampton battled back to tie the game and the teams traded shots down the stretch. HHS was able to take advantage of Eagle miscues down the stretch to set the stage for Oaks’ last shot.
Rocky Croy had 11 points to lead Hampton, while Oaks scored nine points. Conor Jones finished with eight points.
Jordan Bentley scored seven points in the game, while Garret Vines and Matt Hughes had five points apiece.
