Hampton had the upper hand on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs got some separation in the fourth quarter to take a 78-66 victory over University High in District 1-A play, while the Lady Bulldogs hit the gas early and never looked back in a 73-16 win over the Lady Bucs.
In the boys’ game, it was a battle from the opening tip.
The Bulldogs saw UH take an early lead before using a late run to take a 17-14 lead into the second quarter. Hayden Campbell scored 12 points in the second quarter for Hampton, but the Bucs were able to keep pace as the Bulldog held a 40-36 halftime lead.
The second half continued to be a back-and-forth battle as neither team was able to get separation in the third quarter. Cadon Buckles and Campbell continued to be the catalyst for the Bulldogs as the duo combined for 13 points in the third.
Hampton held a 55-51 lead after three complete quarters.
The Bulldog started to take control in the final quarter as Buckles scored 14 points in the final eight minutes to give HHS some breathing room and propel them to the win.
Buckles finished with 34 points to lead Hampton, while Campbell had 26 points. Michael Anspaugh had nine points for Hampton.
AJ Murphy led UH with 19 points.
In the girls’ game, it was all Hampton.
The Lady Bulldogs raced out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes and held a 29-2 lead after a quarter of play. Hampton continued to hold the momentum and hit cruise control as they led 52-2 lead at the half.
The second half continued to be much of the same.
Madi McClain had 16 points, while Faye Carrico had 12 points. Ella Estep and Linsey Jenkins had eight points.
Brea Hicks scored six points.
