Thursday Round-up: Lady Cyclones take senior day win

Elizabethton 11, Sullivan South 7 (softball)
The Lady Cyclones celebrated senior day in a big way on Thursday.

Elizabethton jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings, and then added six runs in the bottom of the sixth after the Lady Rebels scored three runs in the visitors side. South added four runs in the final inning to account for the final tally.

Seniors Abbi McKinney and Jessica Cunningham went 3-for-4, while fellow senior Abbi McKinney went 1-for-3. Lauren Brickey added 3-for-4 performance at the plate for Elizabethton. Autumn Hensley and Macie Herrmann had two hits apiece.

In the pitching circle, Brickey picked up the win with one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Happy Valley 8, University High 7 (baseball)
A five-run fifth inning propelled the Warriors to an 8-7 win over nonconference foe University High on Thursday evening.

Tyler Hurley went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Dustun Sams and Sage Haun went 2-for-4. Landon Morefield and Haun added three RBI apiece.

On the mound, Kevin Whitaker got the started and allowed four earned runs on eight hits. Hunter Jones picked up the win and Hurley received credit for the save.


Avery County (N.C.) 8, Hampton 7 (baseball)
The Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker in a walkoff loss to Avery as the Vikings erased a 7-5 Hampton lead in the final side.

J.B. Byrd had a 3-for-4 performance with three hits, while Clark and Gavin Hardin had two hits apiece.
