A trio of state champion performances highlighted the Tuesday performances from Carter County athletes at the TSSAA Track and Field Championships.
In the Class AA Girls’ Shot Put, Elizabethton’s Jamira Smalls claimed the state title as the junior recorded a mark of 37-8.75 on her second attempt to claim the title.
Lady Cyclones freshman Ava Rogers finished fifth in the event with a mark of 35-6.75.
On the boys’ side in Class AA field events, Elizabethton senior Landry Buckles captured the state title as he recorded a mark of 177-4 on his first attempt. Cyclone senior Diesel Russell finished fourth in the event.
In Class A boys’ pole vault, Happy Valley junior Tyler Bailey won the event with a mark of 13-0. Junior Tyler Bailey finished third in the event with a mark of 12-0.
In the Class AA girls’ discus throw, Liahna Nave claimed a second-place finish with a mark of 120-5. Camdyn Garland finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 32-8.
Freshman Arvella Nave finished third in the Class AA girls’ 3200-meter run with a mark of 11:20.69, while the freshman finished sixth in the Class AA girls’ 1600-meter run for the Lady Cyclones.
Chayanne Everett was slated to compete in the Class AA girls’ 400-meter dash, but the event was postponed to Wednesday.
In Class A action, the Happy Valley team of Abbie Lunsford, Josephine Zeoli, Jordan Fields, and Kaydence Carroll finished in eighth in the girls’ 4×200-meter relay. Carroll also finished eighth in the girls’ triple jump with a mark of 31-8.
In the boys’ 110-meter run, JJ Cable picked up a fourth-place finish with a time of 16.83, while Bailey was fifth with a time of 16.98
Cable was also slated to participate in the 300-meter hurdles, but the event was postponed to Wednesday due to the weather.
