Bulldogs, Lady ‘Landers take decisive victories in county clash

It was a split kind of night in a Carter County rivalry.

The Hampton boys basketball team methodically pulled away to take a 65-38 victory over Cloudland, while the Lady ‘Landers captured a 56-25 win over the Lady Bulldogs at Hampton.

In the boys’ game, the opening minutes saw a back-and-forth battle.

Garrett Vines and Jordan Bentley hit early shots for Hampton, but Cloudland answered back with buckets from Hunter Blair and Bentley Gilbert as the game was tied at 5-5 midway through the first quarter. A quick 5-0 Hampton burst regained the lead for the Bulldogs, and a Matt Hughes 3-pointer as the first quarter came to a close gave HHS an 18-11 lead.

Cloudland continued to battle after Hampton reeled off four straight points to open the second quarter as Blair and Conner Birchfield hit shots to close the ‘Landers deficit to single digits.

Hampton, however, got a spark from Caleb Oaks and Morgan Lyons as a Hampton run to end the half gave the Bulldogs a 34-20 lead at the half.

Cloudland cut into the lead to start the third quarter, but Hampton answered with an 11-2 run to take control of the game. The Bulldogs erased any thought of a comeback to open the final eight minutes with an 11-3 run.

Vines led Hampton with 10 points. Lyons tallied nine points in the win, while Conor Jones, Bentley, Hughes, and Oaks each had eight points.

Gilbert led the ‘Landers with eight points. Hayden Shell had seven points, while Dylan Shell and Blair had six points apiece.

In the girls’ game, Cloudland used a tough defense to limit the Lady Bulldogs attack.

Grace Freeman hit a pair of shots early to give CHS an 8-2 advantage, but Destini Millhorn and the Lady Bulldogs closed the gap back within one with a quick run. Heaven Caraway and the Lady ‘Landers answered in a big way as they finished the half in a 14-4 run – including a buzzing beating 3-pointer from Jasmine Birchfield – to take a 22-11 lead.

Cloudland continued to have the momentum as CHS scored 12 of the first 14 posts in the second quarter to take charge of the game.

In the second half, Cloudland continued to keep Hampton at bay – including limiting the Lady Bulldogs to just four points in the third and four points in the fourth.

Freeman led all scorers with 19 points, while Caraway finished with nine points. J. Birchfield had seven points. K. Birchfield scored six points in the win.

Hannah Collins recorded eight points for Hampton, while Hazen Brummitt finished with seven points. Chloe Watson ended the game with five points.
