In a county clash, Cloudland held the upper hand on Tuesday night.
The ‘Landers took a 56-52 victory over Unaka in boys’ varsity action while the Lady ‘Landers captured a 48-38 win in the girls’ contest on Stoney Creek.
In the boys’ game, Cloudland jumped out to an 11-5 lead over the Rangers in the first quarter, but Unaka responded to trim the CHS lead to three points at the half.
Hunter Shell sparked the ‘Landers in the third quarter, but a balanced Unaka attacked kept the Rangers within striking distance. The teams had a back-and-forth battle over the last eight minutes as CHS held on for the win.
Bentley Gilbert led the way with 16 points, while Shell scored 13 points in the win. Elijah Blair tallied 10 points for the Cloudland cause.
Will Sexton paced Unaka with 18 points. Dylan Whitehead and Ryan Johnson had 11 and nine points, respectively.
In the girls’ game, Jasmine Birchfield tallied 22 points to lead Cloudland to a District 1-A victory.
The Lady ‘Landers, who led by seven at the half, saw Gracie Freeman scored seven points, while Kenzie Birchfield added five points.
Unaka continued to battle in the second half but was unable to make a late run. The Lady Rangers were paced by Lyndie Ramsey’s 19 points. Maci Ensor added 10 points.
