Hampton claimed the season sweep on Friday night.
The Bulldogs used a strong performance from Conor Jones to take a 42-6 victory over Cloudland in non conference action at Orr Field. With the win, Hampton moved to 5-2 on the year and the ‘Landers fall to 2-5 on the season.
Hampton opened the scoring on the game’s first drive.
The Bulldogs embarked on a seven-play drive that was capped off when Isiah Greenwell caught a Jones touchdown pas that covered 45 yards to take a 6-0 lead in the early going. The ‘Landers sniffed out the two-point conversion attempt.
The teams traded possessions for the rest of the quarter, but neither was able to get back on the board as Hampton maintained a 6-0 lead after 12 minutes of play.
Cloudland saw an 11-play drive come up empty handed early in the second despite some key runs from Hunter Blair and Hunter Shell. Jones answered on the next Hampton drive with an 11-yard touchdown and then the sophomore quarterback hit Caleb Oaks to give Hampton a 14-0 lead.
Right before half, the ‘Landers marched down the field efficently. However, Gage Chambers nabbed an interception at the CHS goal line in the final seconds of the half to preserve a 14-0 Hampton lead.
In the third quarter, Hampton was able to get back on the board on their first drive of the half as Jones found Chambers for a score and then Chambers added the conversion.
Cloudland struck late in the stanza as Hunter Shell hit Gage McKinney for a pass and the freshman raced 55 yards for the touchdown to trim the HHS lead going to the final 12 minutes.
Hampton, however, answered decisively with just over eight minutes to play in the half as Jones connected with Jonah Jones for a 21-yard touchdown. After C. Jones recorded an interception, he added a five-yard touchdown to round out his night.
Haden Birchfield connected with J. Jones in the closing minutes to round out the scoring.
Jones finished the night with three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. He was 8-of-13 for 109 yards and added 68 yards on the ground. Macon Barden had 22 yards rushing for Hampton, while J. Jones had 75 yards receiving on three catches. Greenwell and Oaks had 45 and 23 yards, respectively.
Blair tallied 41 yards on 10 carries to lead the way for Cloudland, while Shell went 5-of-12 for 73 yards passing. McKInney had 55 yards of receiving.
Hampton outgained Cloudland 264 – 134.
The ‘Landers return to action next Friday as they host Jellico with the Region 1-A title game on the line. Hampton is set to host South Greene in a pivotal Region 1-2A clash.
