Lady ‘Landers Roll Past UH In District 1-A Consolation Game

Once the Cloudland girls’ basketball team got going, there was no looking back.

The Lady ‘Landers rolled to a 58-38 victory over University High in the District 1-A Consolation game on Monday night at West Ridge.

Cloudland moves into the Region 1-A tournament and will travel to the loser of the Cosby/Washburn District 1-2A Championsjhip game on Friday night for a quarterfinal matchup.

On Monday night, Cloudland got things going midway through the first quarter.

Makenzie Street opened scoring with a bucket off the first possession but neither team was able to get on the board until Vania Ortiz scored with 4:43 for the Lady Bucs. Street answered quickly and sparked a 12-0 Cloudland run over three minutes of play.

The Lady ‘Landers maintained a 17-5 lead after a quarter of play.

Makinna Shell hit back-to-back shots to open the second-quarter scoring, and Cloudland went on a 19-4 run capped by 3-pointers from Eowyn McCoury and Reagan Turbyfill.

CHS led 37-14 at the half.

Abriella Jones and Shell hit shots to counter UH shots in the opening part of the third. Cloudland was able to maintain the advantage the rest of the third to take a 48-26 lead into the fourth.

A quick 7-1 Cloudland run to open the fourth left no doubt.

The Lady ‘Landers were paced by Shell’s 21 points, while Street added 14 points. Jayden Whitley, McCoury, and Jones had six points apiece.

Vonia Ortiz led UH with 14 points, while Emma Chandler, Lemy Ortiz, and Carmen Thomas had six points apiece.
