A pair of big innings proved to be the story of the day at the District 1-A Softball Tournament at Happy Valley on Monday.
Unaka broke open with an 11-run second inning to power the way to a 23-0 victory over Hampton, while Cloudland was unable to respond to eight runs from North Greene in the third inning in an 8-1 decision to the Lady Huskies.
The Lady Rangers will take on North Greene in the Winner’s Bracket finale on Tuesday at 7:30p, while Cloudland and Hampton will face off in an elimination game at 5p.
In the opening game, the teams ended the first inning scoreless, but the Lady Rangers bats got warmed up in the bottom of the second with 11 runs.
Despite a hard-fought effort from Hampton, Unaka added 11 runs in the fourth to secure the win.
Lyndie Ramsey, Alana Parsons, Kendall Bare, and Hailey Gilman recorded three hits apiece to lead Unaka.
Bare tallied five RBI.
Rachel Fair recorded Hampton’s lone hit in the contest.
The nightcap saw runs come at a premium in the opening innings.
Cloudland load the bases in the opening frame and had two base runners in the second, but the game went to the third scoreless.
North Greene had a big inning in the home side of the third with eight runs.
Cloudland saw Izabella Christman drive Saharra McKinney across home plate in the fifth, but the Lady ‘Landers were unable to mount a rally.
Ryan Turbyfill, Ella Benfield, and Christman had two hits apiece to lead the way at the plate for Cloudland.
Karah Fields, Bethany Sluder, and McKinney had a hit apiece.
Fields struck out eight North Greene batters in the pitching circle.
